West Farm

In 2020, I was approached by Chris and Alex to assist with the development of an old barn located on the picturesque coastline of Southerndown in South Wales. The project was an ambitious one: they aimed to transform the barn into a coffee shop, cliffside terrace, cocktail bar, coastal holiday retreat, and a stunning wedding venue.

Chris and Alex are successful design professionals with a clear vision of the aesthetic they wanted to achieve. They sought my assistance to help realize their ideas and meet the functional objectives for each space within the barn.

Working with Chris and Alex was an incredible experience, marked by the exchange of creative ideas and the blending of our individual expertise.

I designed the space layout for each area within the development, ensuring that the spaces were functional and flowed seamlessly into one another. I created detailed plans and counter/bar drawings to ensure the functionality and aesthetics of the hospitality areas met the highest standards. Through mood boards, I conveyed the envisioned style and atmosphere, capturing the contemporary take on coastal design that blended modern elements with the rustic charm of the barn.

Drawing on my knowledge of products and materials, I specified the perfect furniture and lighting pieces for each aspect of the development from Momentum’s extensive portfolio of manufacturers. This included bespoke seating in the cafe and farmhouse kitchen. Each item was chosen or designed to contribute to the cohesive and inviting atmosphere we aimed to create.

As we peeled back the layers of West Farm throughout the development, we discovered more about the history of the place. This deepened our respect for the building, leading us to tweak the plans to honor and preserve its rustic charm.

The collaboration resulted in a stunning transformation of the barn. The coffee shop and cocktail bar were designed to be warm and welcoming, inspired by the surroundings with comfortable seating and ambient lighting that encourage guests to relax and enjoy the coastal views. The coastal holiday retreat offers a serene escape, with carefully chosen furnishings and décor that reflect the natural beauty of the coastline.

The barn’s rustic charm, combined with contemporary design elements, creates a unique and enchanting wedding venue. Alex’s talent as a stylist played a crucial role in this aspect, as her eye for detail and accessories beautifully complemented the overall aesthetic.

Chris and Alex were extremely pleased with the final outcome. Their positive feedback underscored the success of the project and the strong working relationship we developed throughout the process.
